Midwest RPO Field Trip

August 20 - 23, 2001

Aug 20 (Monday) Sault St. Marie, Michigan.

Met with Dwight Sargent (Michigan Intertribal Council) to see the MITC's monitoring network. The network consists of FRMs (two sites), a PM2.5-speciation monitor (one site), and eventually a TEOM (one site).

Aug 21 (Tuesday) Seney National Wildlife Refuge, Michigan

Met with Mike Tansy, who talked about the Refuge and its priorities (i.e., "animals first"). Dr. Don Davis (PSU) and Ed Jepsen (WDNR) talked about plant damage from air pollution (e.g., ozone and acid deposition). Gary Heet showed us the firetower (where the visibility camera is mounted) and the NADP/IMPROVE monitoring site.

Aug 22 (Wednesday) Isle Royale National Park, Michigan

Traveled by boat (Wenonah) from Grand Portage, Minnesota (9:30 am CDT) to Isle Royale National Park (12:30 pm CDT). We did a short hike on the island. The boat left Isle Royale at 3:00 pm CDT and arrived Grand Portage at 6:00 pm CDT.

Aug 23 (Thursday) Grand Portage, Minnesota

Met with Ray Borgen and Mark Rouleau (Grand Portage Tribe) to see the visibility camera site. The camera is mounted on the roof of the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino and looks east out towards Isle Royale National Park.
