Data Analysis at LADCO

The LADCO/MRPO Data Analysis Workgroup is made up of state, local, and stakeholder participants with expertise in ambient air quality data analysis.  Our goal is to use ambient data to shed light on the complex processes of PM and ozone formation, transport, and deposition in the Lake Michigan region.  Because air pollution does not respect state boundaries, and because any given analysis can be done almost as efficiently for the region as for an individual state, there are significant advantages for the states in taking this regional approach.  Individual state analysts work on data for the whole region, and share analysis results that each state can then incorporate into SIPs and other air pollution planning processes.  Our workgroup members benefit as well, since we share not just results but also information on the tools and techniques of the trade.  The workgroup meets via conference call on a monthly basis to share progress, present results, and discuss data issues, software, and training needs.  Since the group's formation in spring 2002, we've met in person once at LADCO and our next meeting is scheduled for May 18, 2005.

Training opportunities

AWMA Environmental Data Analysis Meeting, Chicago, October 3-5, 2005:   This conference will bring together environmental data analysts to present their interpretations on trends, data mining techniques, statistical uncertainties, metric development processes, and other relevant topics. By sharing these techniques and the success stories, environmental data analysts will be better able to shape their future work in their specific geographic areas and with their particular data sets.

This conference will also focus on understanding what high quality environmental data, data systems, and data analysis might be needed or desirable to support sound conclusions and management decision-making (whoever the decision-maker is, CEO, plant manager, federal/state/local official, international bodies, etc.).

Abstracts are due March 11!  This is the perfect opportunity for workgroup members to present recent work and learn about new ways of looking at data.

More details are at: http://www.awma.org/events/confs/data/default.asp

Conference Call Schedule

Next LADCO/MRPO data analysis call is scheduled for Wednesday, March 2, 9 am CDT, 317-233-3088.

The LADCO Data Analysis Workgroup will meet at LADCO on May 18, 2005 for a 1-day meeting to share recent analysis results.  Travel support from LADCO is available to state analysts if needed.  An agenda and hotel information will be posted soon.

Academic Community Meeting

LADCO's academic community met on June 11, 2004.  The goal of this meeting was threefold: to bring together the community of local aerosol science researchers and give them an opportunity to share recent results;  to present a summary of LADCO's recent work and priorities in PM2.5, ozone, and haze research; and to discuss LADCO's future directions and explore possible avenues for collaboration with the academic community.  The agenda and presentations are available here.

Trajectory and Source Apportionment Meeting

LADCO held its third meeting on Trajectory Analysis and Source Apportionment on April 7, 2004.  These meetings have been a great way to keep up with interesting developments in the field, share recent RPO related work, and discuss new directions for these valuable analysis tools.  The agenda and presentations are available below:

Workplan

The Air Quality Assessment Protocol describes the modeling and data analysis work that is being conducted in 2003 by LADCO, the data analysis workgroup, and the modeling workgroup.  All of these projects are focused on results that will support the development of state implementation plans for ozone, PM2.5, and regional haze over the next 4-5 years. (Click here for a copy of the protocol).

Status of Analysis Projects: A comprehensive list of current data analysis projects, the questions we are trying to answer with data analysis, the analyst assigned to each task, and the project status is given in this spreadsheet: Midwest RPO Data Analysis Work.
