Course Description

This two-day course provides an overview of petroleum refining operations and the air quality considerations associated with refinery processes. Participants will learn fundamental petroleum refining terminology and chemistry, the major steps involved in refining crude oil, pollutants of concern, and common air pollution control technologies.

The course also introduces regulations commonly applicable to petroleum refineries and provides an understanding of refinery processes and emission sources that can assist air quality professionals with permitting, compliance, inspection, and regulatory activities.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe basic petroleum refining terminology and concepts.
  • Explain the basic chemistry associated with petroleum refining.
  • Describe the major steps and processes involved in refining crude oil.
  • Identify major process units and their functions within a petroleum refinery.
  • Identify pollutants of concern and potential emission sources associated with petroleum refining.
  • Describe common air pollution control technologies used at petroleum refineries.
  • Explain the purpose and general application of regulations commonly applicable to petroleum refineries.
  • Recognize key emission points and environmental considerations associated with refinery operations.
  • Apply basic knowledge of petroleum refining processes to air quality permitting, compliance, and inspection activities.
